ARTIST STATEMENT:

The traditional 5 elements that constitute the whole universe have been depicted by Christl in the context of the constituents of her backyard. Each painting actually contains multiple elements since they are never each understood in complete isolation. Ether, the all-pervading element, is essentially invisible and hence difficult to depict. Perhaps it is best understood as life itself. Christl is depicting ether by the absence of life in this beautiful Northern Flicker that unfortunately flew into a window and died.
